On the 7th, the 12th Yeongcheon Arirang National Singing Competition and Festival was held at Yeongcheon Citizens’ Hall, hosted by the Yeongcheon Arirang Research and Preservation Society (Chairman Jeon Eun-seok).

Yeongcheon Arirang, which was sung while missing one’s hometown in a foreign land during the Japanese colonial period, is being passed down and preserved by citizens who love Yeongcheon Arirang, and the Yeongcheon Arirang National Singing Contest is held every year to inherit Yeongcheon’s proud traditional culture that embodies the soul and spirit of Yeongcheon.

Applicants from all over the country, including Jeollabuk-do and Gyeonggi-do, gathered from the early morning of the day to register for the competition, and many participants, including 8 singers in the master division, 20 general divisions, and 10 teams (55 people) in the group division, competed fiercely all day long. In particular, the student division (video review) was divided into elementary school division (7 teams, 35 people), middle school division (4 teams, 23 people), and high school division (4 teams, 131 people) from this year to ensure fair competition, and it was a good opportunity to widely publicize Yeongcheon Arirang to future leaders.

Also, the Arirang Grand Festival held in the evening proceeded as a second part congratulatory performance following the first part award ceremony of the Yeongcheon Arirang Competition. It started with a performance by the Yeongcheon Arirang Research and Preservation Society, which reinterpreted Yeongcheon Arirang in various rhythms, followed by the Jeongseon Arirang by Kim Gil-ja, the first holder of Gangwon Intangible Cultural Property, the Daegu Arirang stage by Oh Eun-bi and Shin Su-jin (Yeongnam Folk Song Arirang Preservation Society), and the wonderful congratulatory performance by singers Kang Min and Yang Ji-eun, receiving enthusiastic cheers from the audience.

On this day, the Yeongcheon Arirang Festival came to a grand close with the exciting Yeongcheon Arirang choir performed by Yeongcheon Mayor Choi Gi-moon and the entire cast.
