Yeonggwang-gun visited the e-mobility industry site and related organizations. Yeonggwang-gun (Acting County Governor Kim Jeong-seop) announced that from Friday the 5th to Monday the 8th, it visited the Jeonnam Headquarters of the Korea Automobile Research Institute, the Knowledge Industry Center, and the Production Support Center located in the Daema Electric Vehicle Industrial Complex to inspect the current status of the e-mobility industry and encourage the relevant personnel.
With the full support of the government and South Jeolla Province, Yeonggwang-gun has been promoting 13 national projects with a total budget of KRW 400 billion (KRW 220 billion from the national government, KRW 70 billion from the provincial government, and KRW 110 billion from the county) from 2014 to 2024, doing its best to vitalize the local economy by establishing an e-mobility industry base, securing research and development capabilities, establishing a one-stop corporate support system, and attracting corporate investment.
After receiving a report on the status and performance of the national e-mobility project from the e-Mobility Research Center, military officials visited various facilities where certification and testing can be conducted by the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Since establishing the nation’s first e-mobility research center in the Daema Industrial Complex in Yeonggwang in 2017, the Korea Automobile Research Institute has sequentially installed research buildings, testing buildings, and corporate joint research labs, and completed the only e-mobility-specialized outdoor test bed in Korea in 2019. It is installed to enable certification in accordance with overseas standards as well as domestic certification of e-mobility, contributing to the export of domestic products. Through various equipment installed in the headquarters, it performs about 40 mobility companies and 100 tests and certifications annually. In particular, it is a place that e-mobility companies must go through to develop or sell new products, such as performing ‘1-day charging driving distance certification’, which is an essential certification procedure for receiving subsidies from the Ministry of Environment. The automobile crash test site, which has been in operation since 2021, has been used by about 12 companies, including Kia Motors, Hyundai Motors, GM, and Sevo Mobility. The crash test facility is one of only three facilities in the country, and companies from all over the country are flocking to Daema Industrial Complex for crash tests. During this visit, the Korea Automobile Research Institute suggested to the county that the future mobility crash safety foundation be improved. If the crash safety foundation currently planned is improved, the current mobility-related certification evaluation items will increase from 11 to 33, which is expected to be advantageous for attracting e-mobility companies to Yeonggwang County.
Then, during the visit to the Knowledge Industry Center, we listened to the current status of corporate occupancy and operation, as well as the difficulties faced by e-mobility companies. Currently, 20 e-mobility and energy-related companies and organizations are located in the Knowledge Industry Center and are using it as offices, research labs, etc.
In order to overcome the crisis faced by companies due to the shrinking domestic mobility market, the Korea Smart E-Mobility Association is working with South Jeolla Province and Yeonggwang-gun to promote products and secure export markets by participating in the Vietnam Agricultural Technology Expo (Growtech Expo) and Thailand Electric Vehicle Expo (iEVtech) starting in 2022. In June of this year, an export consultation meeting was held in Hanoi, Vietnam, resulting in 51 export consultations worth USD 27.4 million and an agreement on an export contract worth USD 8.1 million (KRW 11.3 billion) over three years. Association Chairman Lee Deuk-woon announced that they are working to achieve groundbreaking export results at the Vietnam Electric Vehicle Expo planned for September and requested Yeonggwang-gun’s cooperation in supporting overseas exports.
S-Strategy Industry Director (Lee Young-gil) said, “Once the Future Vehicle Electromagnetic Wave Certification Center and Battery High-Safety Evaluation Center are completed by the end of this year, the infrastructure for supporting companies will be complete, so we will now focus on attracting e-mobility companies and supporting overseas exports.”
