Representatives of the Israel Beitenu faction arrived this morning at the President’s residence and announced that they had decided not to recommend any member of the Knesset to form the government in the round of consultations at the President’s residence.

The delegation included the outgoing minister Oded Forer, MK Yevgeni Soba, the faction’s CEO Ina Zilbergerts and the faction’s director Roman Gurvitz.

MK Yevgeni Soba, upon his departure from the consultation, referred to the intention to change the grandson section of the Law of Return: As I told the President, our concern is about changing the Law of Return. The President was previously the chairman of the agency, and in recent days we have also spoken with officials not only in the Diaspora but also in Israel who express Heavy concern about our relations with the Diaspora. All these blatant attempts to try and take over the Law of Return, which is one of the cornerstones of Zionism, and Israeli democracy in our eyes, is a danger to the Jewish people.

As you know, 5 million Jews are still in the Diaspora. If someone who is going to establish such a government, and wants to answer some of the extremists in the government, he is making a mistake and certainly we will not be part of such a government.

We asked the faction members, in 2016 you joined Netanyahu’s previous government after two years. Why won’t it happen again?

Minister Oded Forer: I think that the attempts we have already made to realize our policy have already shown that in terms of both the leadership of the government and the coalition partners in this government that is going to be formed, all they want to do is take care of themselves and not the agenda that we are really committed to, from security and political issues to economic issues. Unlike the outgoing opposition, we also as an opposition know how to support bills that we think should pass, we know how to do it. We did it. And we also know how to torpedo all the bad wishes that I hear from some of those who are going to form the government, so that they don’t happen.
