Yolanda Díaz defends at the UN that “it is possible to overcome a ruthless economic system”

The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) has adopted the first resolution in its history on the social economy, coordinated by Spain and defended this Tuesday in New York by the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz. Member states and international organizations, such as the FMI or the world Bank, undertake to integrate and promote social and solidarity economy practices in their public policies. “It is possible to overcome a ruthless economic system. […] Things, we have verified, can be done differently,” Díaz defended from the UN headquarters.

The Government estimates that the social economy – of which cooperatives, among others, are a part – represents in Spain the 10% of total GDP and brings a 12.5% ​​of employment. Recently and in order to promote it, it has approved a part endowed with more than 800 million euros to promote these kinds of initiatives. The objective of the UN resolution, which has had prominent support from countries such as Senegal y Chileseeks to encourage initiatives of this type throughout the entire planet.

Díaz has claimed the social economy as synonymous with better and more equal working conditions for the people employed in it. “In our country the wage gap between men and women in the social and solidarity economy is eight points lower than the average for the Spanish economy”, he stated.

Catalonia is one of the main niches of the social economy, led by historic cooperatives such as Abacus, Suara or Delta rice paddies, among others. A total of 4,566 of these companies are currently operating in the four Catalan provinces, according to data provided by the Generalitat. This number has shot up 46% in the last five years, without being drastically weighed down by the effects of the pandemic and the subsequent price crisis.
