Yonatan Kapitolnik did not make it to the finals of the European Championships in high jump

by time news

About a month after finishing in the respectable 11th place at the World Championships, high jumper Yonatan Kapitolnik failed to qualify this evening (Tuesday) for the finals of the European High Jump Championships.

The 19-year-old Kapitolnik, the world youth champion last year after clearing a height of 2.26 meters and also the European under-20 champion in 2021 after jumping to a height of 2.25 meters, this evening failed in his three attempts to clear 2.21 meters and was therefore left out of the 12 high jumpers who advanced to the finals. He immediately succeeded in the attempts to pass 2.12 and 2.17 meters, but failed when the bar rose to 2.21.

Let us remind you that in addition to the two amazing wins last year, last May Kapitolnik also recorded a fine achievement when he cleared a height of 2.30 meters and thus achieved the criterion for the European Championships which are currently being held in Munich – with the aforementioned achievement he improved his personal record by three centimeters, but tonight he did not succeed reach such heights and remain out of the finals.

Similar to the high jumper, Diana Wiseman also failed to get the ticket to the finals in the women’s 100 meters. The runner finished third in her semi-final with a time of 11.36 seconds, which ranked her third among the fastest losers and was not enough for her to qualify for the final.

It should be noted that today President Yitzhak Herzog and his wife Michal spoke with the athletes who won medals at the European Athletics Championships in Munich. As you may remember, the president’s wife spoke about a year ago with the athlete Luna Chemtai-Salpeter, after she had to stop running in the Tokyo Olympics. In the exciting conversation today, she congratulated Chemtai on winning the bronze medal and said: “Last year we spoke in a different situation. And I am very happy that you succeeded, you gave your all, and that you are an example to so many women. Well done!”.
