Yoo Seung-min, president of the Korea Table Tennis Association, is running for the presidency of the Korea Sports Council.

The Table Tennis Association announced that at the end of the extraordinary general meeting of delegates held at the Olympic Hall in Songpa-gu, Seoul on the 9th, Chairman Yoo expressed his intention to resign as the president of the Table Tennis Association and declared his intention to run for the position of president of the Sports Association.

Chairman Yoo left a significant mark by serving as chairman for approximately five years from 2019, when he was successfully elected in the by-election, to 2021, and until his resignation in 2024.

Chairman Yoo, who was established as an international sports administrator by being elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2016, was elected as the 24th chairman through a by-election in 2019 to fill the vacancy of former Chairman Cho Yang-ho.

After successfully resolving the potentially chaotic situation caused by the leadership vacuum and completing his term of 1 year and 7 months, he was successfully re-elected as the 25th chairman in the December 2020 election.

During his five-year term, Chairman Yoo has successively fulfilled five pledges he made when he took office: ‘improving the financial independence of the association,’ ‘systematizing table tennis for daily life,’ ‘establishing a system to foster youth players,’ ‘launching a professional table tennis league,’ and ‘successfully hosting the 2024 Busan World Table Tennis Championships.’

In particular, in February of this year, Korea successfully hosted the first ever World Table Tennis Championships in Korea, and successfully hosted the ‘2026 World Masters International Table Tennis Tournament’ in Gangneung, where amateur athletes from around the world participate, thereby firmly establishing the status of Korean table tennis both domestically and internationally.

In addition to keeping his promises, Chairman Yoo made various efforts to improve the performance of Korean table tennis, which had suffered defeats by failing to win a medal in two Olympic Games.

As a result, they won a bronze medal in the mixed doubles event and a bronze medal in the women’s team event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, their first Olympic medal in 12 years since the 2012 London Games.

Chairman Yoo will take a break from table tennis to run for the Korea Sports Council President election next year.

The delegates who attended the general meeting that day specially created and presented plaques of appreciation to support Chairman Yoo’s new challenge.

Chairman Yoo said, “From the moment I first picked up a racket at the age of eight, I have had 35 years of diverse experiences, including 27 years as an athlete and coach, and 8 years as an administrator after being elected as an IOC member. I have gained a broader perspective on the role of sports and the future of athletes in our complex but infinitely potential society.”

He continued, “I want to contribute more to the sports world through my valuable experience and passion for sports. I want to let everyone know the true face of sports, which is to lead the way in improving the quality of life of the people and create various added values, rather than being criticized every time something happens in the sports world.”

The head of a sports organization that is running for president can run for election while maintaining his or her position as president and being suspended from his or her duties, but Chairman Yoo chose the fair method.

He explained the reason for his resignation, saying, “I always approach work with the mindset of a player. The lesson my life as a player taught me is that you can’t get to the top with tricks or excuses. I didn’t want to rest on any of the benefits that come with the title of Chairman of the Korea Table Tennis Association before taking on personal challenges, and I boldly resigned because I thought I couldn’t neglect the work of the association. I decided to play fair to be honest with myself.”

Chairman Yoo, who said that he “will reveal specific plans for his new challenge in the near future,” is drawing attention to what kind of results the new challenge he has decided to achieve.
