The Office of the President announced on the 30th that Taejae University President Yeom Jae-ho was nominated as Vice Chairman of the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Commission under President Yoon Seok-yeol. It also said that Stanford University Professor Andrew Ng, known as one of the “AI Four Heavenly Kings,” will participate as a global advisory member of the National AI Commission.

A senior official at the Blue House met with reporters at the Blue House in Yongsan on this day regarding the composition of the civilian members of the National AI Commission and said, “It is currently being formed, and after verifying personnel, etc., the full list will be disclosed around the first meeting.” He added, “President Yoon Seok-yeol will be the chairman, and Taejae University President Yeom Jae-ho has been designated as the civilian vice-chairman.”

Park Sang-wook, the senior secretary for science and technology at the Blue House, held a briefing that day and announced that President Yoon had met with Professor Andrew Ng in the Blue House. Professor Ng is known as one of the world’s top four AI scholars along with Yoshua Bengio, Yann LeCun, and Geoffrey Hinton. He contributed to the establishment of Google Brain and served as chief scientist at Baidu, a Chinese search engine.

At this location, President Yoon suggested to Professor Eung that he “directly take charge of national policies such as AI innovation, AI safety, and AI transition,” and asked him to participate in the soon-to-be-launched National AI Committee Global Advisory Group. In response, Professor Eung immediately expressed his intention to participate, saying, “I will contribute to Korea’s AI development and Korea-U.S. international cooperation,” according to Chief Park.

A senior official said of the members of the Global Advisory Council, other than Professor Eung, “It is still too early to disclose the list, and some parts are still being discussed,” but emphasized, “It includes some truly surprising world-class AI scholars and businesspeople.”
