President Yoon Seok-yeol asked a citizen he met at the Nonghyup Hanaro Mart Changdong branch in Dobong-gu, Seoul on the morning of the 3rd, “Have the prices of cabbage gotten any better?” and said, “As we get closer to the holiday, I will work to stabilize prices.”

Spokesperson for the Blue House Jeong Hye-jeon said, “President Yoon listened to the voices of citizens regarding the prices of grocery items and inspected whether the Chuseok livelihood stabilization measures announced on the 28th of last month were being implemented smoothly in the field.” He went on a field visit to inspect the prices of grocery items two weeks before the Chuseok (17th) holiday.

President Yoon asked citizens shopping at the first-floor fruit stand if they were ready for the holiday, saying, “The prices of apples and pears are still high, but the government will release a lot of stockpiled produce for the holiday to lower the prices a bit, so please wait a little longer.”

According to the ‘August Consumer Price Trend’ by Statistics Korea, the price of pears rose 120.3% year-on-year, while the prices of apples (17.0%) and cabbage (9.6%) also rose significantly. Compared to the previous month, spinach rose 62.5% due to the August heat wave, while the prices of lettuce (41.4%), cabbage (37.6%), and tomatoes (17.5%) also increased. Accordingly, the government announced the Chuseok livelihood stabilization measures on the 28th of last month, stating that it would supply 12,000 tons of cabbage and radish, the largest ever, and 3 times the usual amount of apples and pears, for a total of 170,000 tons, the largest ever for 20-something crops.

When a customer who was shopping at the Korean beef section asked President Yoon to “choose some meat for me to use in seaweed soup,” President Yoon replied, “Meat with a little bit of fat is good for making seaweed soup.”

The schedule for that day was carried out privately without the press corps accompanying them. It seems to have been conscious of the so-called ‘green onion controversy’ that occurred at the Nonghyup Hanaro Mart Yangjae branch in Seocho-gu, Seoul in March of this year.
