Unification Doctrine Background and Purpose Explained to Elders
Scholars: “Efforts to attract support from the international community”
Advice on developing customized content for the unified education and AI era
On the 21st, President Yoon Seok-yeol invited Professor Emeritus Kim Hyung-seok of Yonsei University, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and other senior figures to a luncheon and discussion, explaining the “August 15 Unification Doctrine” announced on Liberation Day and asking for their opinions.
The elders assessed that the unification doctrine is timely and appropriate at this point in time and asked for efforts to gain support from the international community.
The Office of the President announced in a press release that day, “President Yoon explained the background and purpose of the August 15 Unification Doctrine announcement to senior figures in the fields of unification and diplomacy.”
The meeting was attended by Honorary Professor Kim, former Secretary-General Ban, Kyungnam University Distinguished Professor Kang In-deok, Shin Asia Research Institute Chairman Lee Sang-woo, Cheong Wa Dae Foundation Chairman Yoon Byung-se, East Asia Research Institute Chairman Ha Young-sun, former Unification Minister Hyun In-taek, and Sungkyunkwan University Professor Lee Sook-jong.
The elders said, “It is timely to announce the unification doctrine at this point,” the presidential office said, adding, “Above all, we must prioritize strengthening the foundation of liberal democracy by allowing truth and freedom to grow together in Korean society.”
The elders then advised that an easy and persuasive unification education program is needed so that our people can think about unification again and reflect on the ideological meaning given by the spirit of the Constitution and the liberal normative order.
He also said that content that is suitable for the AI era must be developed.
They especially urged, “As the international community has recently been highly evaluating the international status and role of the Republic of Korea, we urge you to make active efforts to publicize our vision of unification and to elicit international support and cooperation for it.”
