On the 30th, President Yoon Seok-yeol met with a delegation of U.S. House of Representatives members visiting Korea and exchanged opinions on the Korea-U.S. alliance, Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation, and regional and international issues.
President Yoon expressed his gratitude to the delegation, saying, “Thanks to the interest and support of the U.S. Congress, the ROK-U.S. alliance has grown into a ‘global comprehensive strategic alliance’ that has supported the freedom and prosperity of both countries over the past 70 years.”
He also said, “Close cooperation between Korea, the U.S., Korea, the U.S., and Japan based on common values is essential to overcome the global complex crisis,” and asked, “I ask the U.S. Congress to continue to provide support so that this cooperation can be strengthened in the future.”
The delegation to South Korea commented, “We feel that relations between our two countries have strengthened like never before since the president took office,” and “Thanks in particular to President Yoon’s courage and leadership, trilateral cooperation among South Korea, the United States, and Japan was able to enter a new era.”
The delegation also emphasized that “in order to address regional and global challenges, including the North Korea issue, the United States must work more closely than ever with key allies in the Indo-Pacific region, including South Korea.”
He added, “We will continue to work to deepen cooperation between Korea and the United States within the U.S. Congress.”
The House of Representatives delegation that President Yoon met with that day included Rep. John Mulena (R-Michigan), chairman of the House Special Committee on China and Strategic and Competition, and Reps. Ro Khanna (D-California), Ben Klain (R-Va.), Tom Suwaji (D-New York), Brian Babin (R-Texas), and Barry Rudermilk (R-Georgia).
