People Power Party lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun said on the 8th, “The Yoon Seok-yeol government should immediately declare war on ‘drugs’ and ‘digital sex crimes’ and root out related crimes and criminals.” He called on the government to respond more strongly as drug crimes have been on the rise and deepfake (image synthesis based on artificial intelligence) sex crimes have become a major social problem.

Rep. Yoon held a press conference at the National Assembly this morning and said, “South Korea is mired in a serious swamp of crime. One is drugs, and the other is digital sex crimes using deepfakes.” He added, “Both crimes have recently spread further through the Internet messenger Telegram, and are still being committed at this very moment.”

Rep. Yoon continued, “Just as we protected the people from crime and intimidation by organized crime groups through the past war on crime, we must now wage war on drug and digital sex crimes.” To this end, he proposed the establishment of a ‘Narcotics Investigation Agency’ and an ‘Integrated Digital Sex Crimes Task Force.’

Rep. Yoon said, “Current drug investigations are divided between the prosecution and police, and joint investigations between the two agencies have not been carried out properly since the adjustment of the prosecution and police investigation authority.” He added, “Taking advantage of this gap, a large amount of drugs are pouring into the country. We need to quickly establish a specialized drug investigation agency that integrates not only the prosecution and police drug investigators but also related agencies.”

In relation to digital sex crimes, Rep. Yoon emphasized, “We must establish a dedicated department for digital sex crimes and thoroughly prepare measures to prevent secondary harm along with strong authority.” He also said, “The National Assembly must swiftly enact the ‘Digital and Cyber Security Act’ and ‘AI-related laws’ to prevent and punish crimes through bipartisan cooperation.”
