President Yoon Seok-yeol emphasized the importance of agriculture in securing food security and announced that he would work to achieve 5 trillion won in direct agricultural payments by 2027. This means that he will significantly increase subsidies to support farmers’ incomes from the current level and promote agriculture as a future growth industry.

On the 30th, President Yoon made this announcement in a congratulatory speech at the ‘2024 A-Farm Show’ read by Sung Tae-yoon, Chief of Staff to the President. President Yoon said, “The government will increase the size of the agricultural settlement support fund and provide young farmers with priority farmland to support them so that they can take on the challenge of future cutting-edge agriculture.” He also said, “We will boldly reform location regulations so that various convergence companies can enter the agricultural sector.” President Yoon added, “We will actively support rural business startups so that young people’s ideas can lead to new product development and job creation.”

Key participants also unanimously agreed that agriculture is the future of Korea. Minister of Public Administration and Security Lee Sang-min said, “I was able to vividly feel the potential of our rural areas at this A-Farm Show,” and added, “I hope you will also take interest in the Hometown Love Donation System for the development of your hometown.”

Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mei-ling said, “A-Farm Show is a place where the public can experience a variety of new aspects of agriculture and rural areas, from cutting-edge agricultural technologies to information on returning to the farm,” and added, “The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will also promote three major transformations: digital, generation, and rural space, to make agriculture and rural areas spaces of opportunity.”

Gyeongbuk Governor Lee Cheol-woo emphasized, “We need to solve the problem of lower income for farmers than for urban workers through a major agricultural transformation,” and “We need to develop the 6th industry of agriculture with the active participation of companies to create prosperous rural areas.” Jeollabuk-do Governor Kim Kwan-young said, “I hope many people in the metropolitan area will come to the site and see various exhibitions and technologies that will give them a glimpse into the future of agriculture,” and “I hope this event will be an opportunity to see that rural areas are not backward areas, but areas with hope for the future.”

Park Woo-ryang, former mayor of Sinan County in South Jeolla Province, said, “I learn something new every year because I can see new technologies related to cooling and heating that reduce costs.” Kang Ho-dong, chairman of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, said, “Agriculture is the core of food security and is emerging as a promising industry for the future,” and added, “We will be a strong supporter so that farmers who take on the challenge can settle down successfully.”
