Women negotiate their salary less often and worse. A persistent cliché? Not at all, if you ask negotiation trainer Claudia Kimich. “Unfortunately it’s true,” says Kimich, who has been coaching women and men, giving workshops and also advising companies for more than 20 years. A survey of around 2,000 employees by the LinkedIn careers network last year confirms this: 41 percent of the women surveyed stated that they had never negotiated their salary either when starting a new job or with their current employer. For men, on the other hand, the proportion was only 26 percent. When asked why, women more often than men responded that they did not feel comfortable asking.
