A road movie from Mali with big band sound – and a concert in Berlin

The Omniversal Earkestra is a big band from Berlin, twelve wind instruments plus bass and drums. Every Monday the band plays their own compositions and standards from Duke Ellington to Sun Ra to Fela Kuti on a Berlin underground stage. Some time ago, while searching for new ideas, the musicians came across compositions from Mali from the 1970s. Dogon, Wassalou or Tuareg music mixed with Cuban-influenced, funky wind sections.

The Omniversal Earkestra included the compositions in its repertoire, but more than that: the musicians decided at some point to go to the old masters in Mali. Filmmaker Markus CM Schmidt accompanied her road trip. His film opens in cinemas on August 17th, but before that there will be a screening at Kesselhaus and a live concert with the omniversal Earkestra and their heroes from Mali: Cheick Tidiane Seck, Aly Keïta, Mouneissa Tandina, Issa Sory Bamba, Adama Diarra. The long night of astronomy at Tempelhofer Feld

If there is life out there in space, the extraterrestrials should make a bold entry in their calendars: The Berlin planetariums invite you to the Long Night of Astronomy on Friday as part of the Berlin Cultural Summer Festival. Hobby sky-gazers of all ages are shown and explained what is wandering across the firmament; and it would be a nice performance if a vehicle with sensible passengers appeared among all the stars, snowfalls, planets, satellites and the glowing space junk.

Conveniently, the meeting point is the jump mark, which is best reached via the entrance on Tempelhofer Damm, which can of course also be accessed from above, coming from the stratosphere. Registration is not required. Earthlings and aliens can drop by spontaneously. Ulrich Seidler

Avantgarde-Jazz-Festival: To the weapon! Flight. X+I

For some, Jazz: Frank Sinatra and the Classics of the Great American Songbook. But for the others that would be too mainstream cuddly jazzy. They want it daring, foolhardy, noisy, overwhelming. Of course, this also includes the fans of the recently deceased free jazz saxophonist Peter Brötzmann.

In many respects, the A L’arme festival in Berlin has been following Brötzmann’s tradition since 2012. It is now taking place for the eleventh time. Or, as the festival writes itself: to the X+I. Just. The somewhat martial-sounding festival name (“to the arms!”) is, let it be revealed to reassure all pacifists, only calls for battle in the sense that Brötzmann himself described his saxophone as a machine gun. sound wise. But the many synthesizers used at the festival can undoubtedly fire, in terms of sound.

One of the highlights is undoubtedly Claire Rousay’s performance on Friday evening from 9:30 p.m. Her favorite sounds include: plastic bags, whispers, social media chatter, and aluminum cans. But also stopwatches and lawn mowers. A My Way of a completely different kind. If only Frank Sinatra knew! Stefan Hochgesand
