Various health authorities recommend consuming five to ten servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Why is this so important?

In France, the recommendations are 5 servings of 80 grams per day. The ideal is to eat “rainbow”, in other words to vary the fruits and vegetables according to their colors, because they provide additional nutrients, vitamins (C, B9, A), key minerals, but also fibers. And above all, they have a low energy density: in other words they fill our stomach, and therefore satiate us without providing too many calories. They thus make it possible to reduce our consumption of less virtuous foods, meat or processed products and sweets, in particular. All these qualities make them protective factors against chronic diseases: obesity, cardiovascular problems, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.
