The popular WhatsApp service will soon have to make major changes to comply with the European Union’s new rules on digital markets. There is a new feature in it, as well as interoperability with other services for sending first. It means that you will be able to chat not only with other WhatsApp users, but also with those in other services.
According to information from an interview with the editor of the WhatsApp division, Dick Brouwer, on the Wired server, it is fully connected to services such as iMessage, Telegram, Google Messages, Signal and more. It will be possible to send not only text messages, but also images, voices, videos and other types of files between the services.
There’s a lot of fun here. Very bad about how much the representatives of these services will cooperate with Meta (the owner of WhatsApp). Therefore, there are concerns about how WhatsApp will ensure the integrity and security of personal data at the time of joining the service.
WhatsApp is also secured by its own encryption protocol (Signal Protocol), other services have their own. Therefore, if they want to participate in the option of sending messages to Meta applications, which includes not only WhatsApp, but also Facebook Messenger, they will have to commit to the qualitatively same encryption standards as provided by Signal Protocol.
Along with that, he will sign a mutual cooperation agreement with you, the details of which have only been revealed by Meta in the open. Some companies do not have to do this, and instead they can negotiate their own terms, and these processes will theoretically intertwine without certainty of concrete results.
Meta is approaching this news only under pressure from the European Union, which in its report on digital markets named the company as one of the digital gatekeepers to which these rules will apply. This means that he must comply with the rules regarding the economic value between digital services. Although this provision entered into force last year, the requirement has until March 2024 to be fulfilled.
