The Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba (MINFAR) published its call for young people born in 2008 to register in the Cuban Military Registry, a previous step to the much criticized Compulsory Military Service.

Through an informative note, the state institution recalls that “the formalization of the settlement in the Military Registry constitutes a sample of the will of those summoned to prepare for the defense of the homeland.”

Registration in said registry must be made between the months of January to March 2024, following the provisions of Decree-Law 224 that regulates the organization of the Military and Reserve Service that Cuban citizens must provide and the rules for compliance in the units and dependencies of the FAR or the MININT for two years.

The MINFAR text later indicates that the procedure is carried out in the Attention Areas of the provincial and municipal military committees, depending on the place of residence or others arranged on the days and times established for young people.

Regarding documents, each young person will present their identity card or minor card and as proof will receive the “proof of registration.”

In the middle of this year, the Cuban Parliament approved the Military Penal Code that includes sanctions of up to five years in prison for those young people who evade Military Service.

The code also contains other penalties for those who do not respond to the call or self-harm to avoid it.

In article 41 of Chapter III, the legal regulations establish, among other points, that “whoever, with the intention of definitively evading military service, abandons the unit or place where he provides service, or fails to appear when he is supposed to do so, incurs sanction of deprivation of liberty of two to five years.

For its part, the National Defense Law includes that “all male Cuban citizens are obliged to complete Military Service in the manner and terms” that the law itself establishes.
