A young woman who was misdiagnosed and underwent hormonal gender transition treatment when she was still a teenager decided to go to court and sue the pediatrics entity because of the wrong instructions.

Isabelle Ayala, 20, is suing the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for what she considers a “collective failure to treat her appropriately in the name of the so-called ‘gender-affirming’ model of care.” When she was 14, she was diagnosed as transgender and spent three years receiving male hormones.

The process includes the doctors who treated her as defendants, and according to the North American press, this is the first time that an action involving health issues covers a class entity and professionals.

“I really don’t want this to happen to other vulnerable girls. I don’t want puberty to be the enemy. I don’t want our natural biology to be the enemy,” Isabelle told The New York Post.

The lawsuit, which is 38 pages long, alleges civil conspiracy, fraud, medical malpractice and gross negligence, lack of informed consent and vicarious liability. The young woman’s story is also being told in a documentary that a women’s protection organization produced.

In the interview with PostIsabelle said that she was sexually abused when she was young and her puberty began at the age of 8, two circumstances that resulted in trauma and resentment, which led her to reject femininity and desire to be a man.

At age 14, she was admitted to a clinic and diagnosed with gender dysphoria by a doctor, who decided that she would “benefit from the use of cross-sex hormones” after a single consultation that lasted less than an hour.

According to information from the broadcaster Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN News), in the lawsuit the young woman accuses doctors of ignoring her previous diagnoses of autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

“They falsely indicated that cross-sex hormone therapy was the only treatment option available to Isabelle to effectively treat her gender dysphoria, as well as her anxiety, depression, PTSD and suicidality,” he charges.

Existential pains

At the age of 17, Isabelle attempted suicide and decided to abandon testosterone intoxication. When she got rid of the hormones, she realized she wasn’t a man and that her transition had been a huge mistake.

The hormonal treatments resulted in irreversible physical changes and she suffered permanent damage such as vaginal atrophy, unwanted hair and compromised bone structure.

“Isabelle is now twenty years old and longs for what could have been and to have her healthy female body back. The changes testosterone had on her body are a constant reminder that she needed an impartial medical expert willing to assess her mental health and provide her with the care she needed, rather than a group of ideologues determined to promote her own agenda and promote a broader conspiracy at its expense”, summarizes the lawsuit, filed in October.

“There was no mental health diagnosis, no psychobehavioral diagnosis, nothing other than simply taking Isabelle at her word about what she needed,” attorney Jordan Campbell said.

The lawsuit asks the court to award unspecified compensatory and punitive damages and attorneys’ fees and costs. The AAP did not comment on the case.
