In case of choking, it is crucial to act quickly. Here are the steps to follow:
Ask if the person can talk or cough:
If you can talk or cough, encourage forceful coughing.
If you cannot speak, cough or breathe, act immediately.
Perform the Heimlich maneuver (abdominal thrusts):
Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around their waist.
Place one fist just above the navel and grab the fist with the other hand.
Apply rapid inward and upward thrusts to try to dislodge the object.
For a baby under one year old:
Back slapping:
Place the baby face down on your forearm, supporting his head and neck with your hand.
Give 5 firm blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
Perform chest compressions:
If back blows do not dislodge the object, turn the baby onto his back.
Place two fingers in the center of your chest, just below the nipple line.
Apply 5 quick, firm compressions.
If the person loses consciousness:
Call emergency medical services immediately.
Start CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) if you know how to do it:
Alternate between chest compressions and rescue breaths until professional help arrives or the person regains consciousness.
Additional precautions:
Do not attempt to remove the object with your fingers unless it can be clearly seen and easily reached.
Do not hit the back if the person is coughing effectively, as this could cause the object to move further in.
Acting quickly and calmly can save lives in choking situations.
