The Archdiocese of Madrid (Spain) has launched a campaign with the aim of raising the 100,000 euros needed to arrive “on time” to the main events of World Youth Day (WYD) in Lisbon, after noting logistical difficulties.

The problem that they are trying to solve is that, from the place in the Cascais region, 40 kilometers from the Portuguese capital, where the organization has located the Madrid delegation, to Lisbon, there is only one train line.

This infrastructure is insufficient to guarantee the effective daily movement of its more than 6,600 pilgrims.

The director of the Youth Delegation (DELEJU) of the Archdiocese of Madrid, Fr. Luis Melchor Sánchez, explained to ACI Prensa that the objective of the campaign is to “facilitate and improve the experience” of young pilgrims and that in no case does this effort imply criticism of the WYD organizers.

In this same line, in the official message of the campaign, it is stated: “Our Portuguese brothers are preparing everything with great generosity.”

Despite this, DELEJU notes that there is a logistical difficulty that prevents the best possible development of the trips and that the planned transport “will not be enough”.

Consequently, they ask for financial help so that “the young people of Madrid can arrive at the main events with Pope Francis on time”, they detail in the request for funds.

The money raised will be used to “hire a larger fleet of buses than scheduled to reasonably guarantee that service.”

Father Sánchez confirms that the additional effort exceeds 140 vehicles.

In addition to the central acts with the Pope, the Spanish pilgrims have planned a meeting on Monday, July 31 in the Estoril Gardens.

Contributions intended to alleviate the difficulties noted can be made through the platform I donate to my Church of the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE).

Until now, only the Archdiocese of Madrid has launched a campaign of this type due to the number of its pilgrims, much higher than the rest of those who will come from other Spanish dioceses.
