Between August 30 and September 1, the Department of Classical Philology and Neo-Latin of the University of Szeged is organizing an international conference with a record number of participants for the tenth time. The motto of the conference is a Latin saying, which translates as “The educated man is at home in the whole world”. In this, the mission of the program series is also condensed, they want to draw attention to the fact that it provides a home for the holders of European education rooted in classical antiquity all over the world.
One of the main objectives of the conference is to provide young researchers in the field with the opportunity to perform and publish. The organizers said that the important goal of the event is to introduce and love the city of Szeged and SZTE, in addition to researching Hungarian ancient science, Neo-Latin studies and their reception, with young researchers coming from many countries around the world.
The topics of this year’s conference sections will be Greek literature, the late Roman empire, ancient history, ancient religious studies, Roman history, contemporary adaptations, philosophy, Greek history, the age of Augustus, late antiquity, Homer and neo-Latin studies.
Over three days at the Faculty of Arts in Szeged, more than sixty young researchers report on their current scientific results. The six plenary lectures are given by young scientists who have participated in the Sapiens Ubique Civis conference several times in the past decade, and in the meantime obtained their doctorate degrees.
The participants of the English-language conference come from different universities of more than a dozen countries: in addition to universities in Europe – Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, France, Greece, Ireland, Germany, Norway, Italy, Spain – also from the United States and Georgia. In addition to SZTE, Hungarian ancient science is represented by lecturers from the University of Debrecen, Eötvös Loránd University, Eötvös József Collegium, Pázmány Péter Catholic University and Semmelweis University.
The organizers welcome all interested parties to the conference.
