DIG Southern Region sought a report from the Additional Commissioner on the allegation that Ashwant (21) committed suicide in Kollam Chavara due to police torture. Additional Commissioner Soni Oommen Koshi will examine the CCTV footage of Chavara station today with the help of cyber cell.

Ashwant’s relatives had protested in front of the station with the dead body, alleging that Ashwant had committed suicide due to police torture. Ashwant, a native of Chawara, was found hanging dead yesterday morning. The protest ended yesterday with the assurance that action would be taken against the police officers if they had committed a crime.

Ashwant was in love with the police officer’s daughter. The officer’s wife complained to the garbage station that Ashwant was harassing her children. Yesterday, when Ashwant was called to the garbage station, the police officer’s daughter tried to commit suicide by cutting her veins. The complaint is that the police officer then tortured him mentally and due to this, Ashwant committed suicide.

Ashwanth’s brother also stated that there had been threats from the girl’s relatives earlier. Meanwhile, the allegation is baseless. Chavara Police’s explanation is that no kind of torture has taken place. Chavara MLA Dr Sujith Vijayanpilla said that he would file a complaint with the Chief Minister to investigate the incident.
