Painter Kim Seon-du has unveiled a portrait of YouTuber Chimjeongman (Lee Mal-nyeon) drawn with ink on paper at his solo exhibition, “Blue Days.” Kim Seon-du, who is also famous for drawing Jang Seung-eop’s portrait in the movie “Chihwaseon,” is an artist who ponders how to draw Korean paintings in a modern way using brilliant colors and various compositions. On the 17th of last month, the day the exhibition opened, he said at Hakgojae in Jongno-gu, Seoul, “We need to properly explore the ink and brush that are at the center of Korean paintings,” and “I want to show how to tell a new story in an old way.”

The portrait of the calm man he drew is part of the series “Beautiful Times.” The artist drew the faces of famous people such as poet Kim Su-yeong and baseball player Seon Dong-yeol, and created a calendar-like section below them. In this section, the subject of the portrait writes down the schedule he accomplished each day. As time passes, the schedule fills up, and the white space becomes a black stain.

In the portrait of the calm man, you can see his busy daily life, such as a goods meeting, eating garaetteok, getting a passport, and visiting friends’ houses. There is also a portrait of poet Kwak Hyo-hwan, and it is said that when he wrote his schedule and said that it would be exhibited, poet Kwak erased it because he was embarrassed. Kim Seon-du laughed, saying, “It’s a shame that it was erased so cleanly.”

In addition, you can also see works that contain the transparent and deep colors characteristic of Korean painting by applying paint multiple times on paper (jangji). These include the 8m wide large-scale works, “Fresh Firecracker” and “Day Star” series. The exhibition will be held until the 17th.
