Yuvraj Singh Appointed Delhi Capitals’ Assistant and Batting Coach Ahead of IPL 2027

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has been appointed as Delhi Capitals’ assistant and batting coach for IPL 2027, marking his first formal coaching role and reuniting him with Sourav Ganguly, who will serve as head coach.

Yuvraj Singh, a two-time World Cup winner, has taken on his first formal coaching role as Delhi Capitals’ assistant and batting coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The appointment reunites him with Sourav Ganguly, who was named head coach earlier this year, and marks a new phase in his association with the franchise, which signed him for a record Rs 16 crore in 2015.

In a statement, Yuvraj emphasized the importance of self-belief and team unity, saying, At this level, everybody is skilled and brings something different to the table. But I come from a place where self-belief is extremely important. He aims to instill confidence in the squad, with the ultimate goal of winning the IPL title. We definitely have the ability, and that's why Dada and I are coming in — to bring that belief back, he added, referring to Ganguly.

Yuvraj’s return to Delhi Capitals is a key moment for the franchise, which has never won an IPL title. He played 14 matches for the team in 2015, scoring 248 runs, and his new role includes working closely with the batting lineup. The coaching staff also includes Chaminda Vaas as fast bowling coach, replacing Munaf Patel, and Amit Mishra as spin bowling coach (Yet to be confirmed). Other members of the support staff include Fielding Coach John Mooney, Assistant Fielding Coach Yalaka Gnaneswara Rao, Strength and Conditioning Coach Sajan Thakur, and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Sai Pranay Alakanti.

Reuniting with Delhi Capitals and New Coaches

The decision to appoint Yuvraj comes after a restructuring of the franchise’s management. Parth Jindal, chairman and co-owner of Delhi Capitals, highlighted Yuvraj’s experience, winning mindset, and ability to connect with players, adding that his appointment is a special opportunity for the team. The adjustment to the support staff resulted from a deal between the franchise’s co-owners, GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and Jindal South West (JSW) Sports, finalized after the 2024 IPL season.

Delhi Capitals have also been active in the player trade market in recent months. Fast bowler T Natarajan returned to Sunrisers Hyderabad from Delhi, while spinner Zeeshan Ansari moved the other way. Natarajan, who Delhi secured for Rs 10.75 crore during the 2025 auction, was transferred to SRH for Rs 5 crore, whereas Ansari joined the Capitals at his previous rate of Rs 40 lakh. Another significant trade, revealed months prior, saw wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant rejoin Delhi Capitals from Lucknow Super Giants, with left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav departing for Lucknow.

Legacy and New Coaching Goals

With a career spanning 17 years, Yuvraj has 304 ODIs, 40 Tests, and 58 T20Is under his belt, including important roles in India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup victories. His IPL career includes 132 matches, 2,750 runs, and 36 wickets. Now, he aims to translate this experience into coaching, stating, I’m here to put my heart and soul into the franchise.

Delhi Capitals’ leadership expressed confidence that Yuvraj’s presence will strengthen the team’s batting department. We have good batting resources, but we need to work on the right team combination and make the side stronger and more versatile, Yuvraj said. The franchise’s immediate goal is to qualify for the playoffs, but their sights are set on the championship. Yuvraj highlighted the importance of skilled players like KL Rahul, Tristan Stubbs, Sameer Rizvi, and Ashutosh Sharma, whom he described as strong batting options.

Yuvraj’s hiring also highlights the growing involvement of ex-international players in mentorship and coaching roles in the IPL. Their expertise can help bridge the gap between local talent and the pressures of high-stakes franchise cricket. The team hopes these qualities will lead to improved performances as it prepares for the 2027 season.

The franchise has also appointed Vijay Bharadwaj as Head of Scouting and Iqbal Abdulla as Talent Scout, with Srinath Balaji Nagarajan as Team Manager and Raoul McPherson as Assistant Team Manager.

Yuvraj’s long-standing association with the franchise includes his time as a player, where he was the most expensive player in the history of the league at the time of his 2015 signing. He played all 14 matches for the team that season, scoring 248 runs. His return as a coach underscores the franchise’s commitment to leveraging his expertise to achieve success. Yuvraj voiced confidence in the Delhi Capitals’ batting lineup, pointing out players like KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs, along with emerging hitters Sameer Rizvi and Ashutosh Sharma.

The franchise’s efforts to strengthen its coaching staff align with its strategy to contend for the IPL title.
