This is a small victory for the defenders of the animal cause. And the opportunity “to show that we remain vigilant”, we explain within the Paris Animals Zoopolis (PAZ) association. Last Wednesday, the Paris administrative court ordered Siaap, the water treatment association for the Paris region, to send the association within one month the safety audit carried out the day after the industrial disaster that had produced at the Seine-Aval plant in 2019. A juggernaut through which nearly 60% of the wastewater in Île-de-France passes.

On July 3, that year, a large-scale fire broke out in the clarifloculation unit, one of the stages in the treatment of water before it is discharged into the Seine. As a result, large volumes of untreated water poured into the Seine, causing the death of nearly three tons of fish in the following days. In April 2020, Paris Animals Zoopolis filed a complaint on their behalf.

“Know what caused the death of these millions of fish”

This safety audit, the conclusions of which we revealed in April 2021, had been carried out at the request of the State, decided to put pressure on the sanitation giant. It revealed serious safety shortcomings on this site, which is nevertheless classified as Seveso high threshold. The Siaap then gave itself three years to bring itself into compliance and completely review its copy in terms of security.

“For us, this document is essential because it will make it possible to precisely identify these deficiencies, to know what caused the death of these millions of fish, indicates the association. At the time, it didn’t bother anyone. No association apart from us has filed a complaint. The fishermen had contented themselves with a check to stock up. We first want to make sure that this does not happen again”.
