  • Right-hander Zac Gallen remains a notable free agent as February begins.
  • The Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, and Los Angeles Angels have all shown interest in Gallen.
  • Gallen posted a 13-15 record with a 4.83 ERA in 2025, raising some concerns among potential suitors.
  • The Padres, in particular, could benefit from adding Gallen to counter moves by division rivals.

As February begins, several notable free agents remain unsigned, particularly in the starting pitching market. Among those still available is right-hander Zac Gallen, though some teams may be hesitant after his 2025 performance of 13-15 with a 4.83 ERA and a noticeable dip in his strikeout rate.

Despite the slightly concerning 2025 season, Gallen’s market isn’t entirely cold. According to Brian Murphy of MLB.com, the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, and Los Angeles Angels have all been linked to the right-hander throughout the offseason.

How Gallen Fits with Each Suitor

The Orioles arguably have the greatest need. They allowed Corbin Burnes to depart last offseason without a replacement, and haven’t secured an ace for 2026. While the addition of Shane Baz via trade is helpful, they need a proven, top-of-the-rotation arm—a role Gallen could fill.

The Cubs brought back Shota Imanaga after he accepted the qualifying offer, but a frontline starter could still elevate their chances of winning the National League Central for the first time since 2020. Gallen’s skill set would be a strong addition to their pitching staff.

The Angels present an intriguing possibility. They’ve been active this winter, but haven’t made any blockbuster acquisitions. Their starting rotation is a clear area of need, and Gallen could provide a boost as they begin a new era under first-year manager Kurt Suzuki.

Finally, the Padres could use some reinforcements. Aside from re-signing Michael King, they’ve been relatively quiet this offseason. They’ve also watched Luis Arraez move to the San Francisco Giants, while the Los Angeles Dodgers continue to spend aggressively.

The Padres would be wise to respond to these moves to remain competitive for a Wild Card spot in 2026. Adding Gallen could be the perfect countermove, especially as they aim to rebound from their Wild Card Series loss last October.

Ultimately, where Gallen lands remains to be seen, but each of these four teams represents a logical fit for the veteran pitcher.
