Archaeologists using luminescence dating on surrounding sand have determined that a notched wooden log discovered beneath Zambia’s Kalambo Falls in the 1950s is at least 476,000 years old, representing some of the earliest known evidence of people deliberately shaping and joining wood.

The 1950s Discovery and the Dating Problem That Stymied Decades of Research

For more than half a century, a strangely shaped timber buried beneath the 235-metre waterfall on the Kalambo River sat at the center of an archaeological puzzle. Archaeologist J. Desmond Clark originally uncovered the log, which featured tapered ends and a deliberate-looking notch cut into its surface, during excavations in the 1950s. While Clark believed someone had worked the wood using stone tools, establishing its true age proved impossible with the technology of the era. Radiocarbon dating could not reach remotely far enough, as its practical range stops at roughly 50,000 years.

An early uranium-series attempt produced an estimate of around 180,000 years, but that figure carried serious uncertainties. Wood is not an ideal material for uranium-series testing because uranium can enter it after burial. Because the chemical system may have changed over time, researchers treated those early results with caution. Clark died in 2002 without ever seeing the question definitively resolved.

How Luminescence Dating Re-wrote the Timeline at Kalambo Falls

Decades after Clark’s initial excavations, researchers returned to the site as part of the Deep Roots of Humanity project, led by Larry Barham of the University of Liverpool. The new work brought modern dating techniques to the waterlogged landscape of northern Zambia, close to the border with Tanzania. Crucially, the team did not test the fragile timber directly. Instead, the researchers turned to the sediment in which it had been buried.

The method, known as luminescence dating, measures mineral grains like sand that are reset by sunlight while exposed at the surface. Once buried, small amounts of natural radiation accumulate within the grains, allowing scientists to calculate how long those sediments have been away from daylight. According to the study published in Nature, titled Evidence for the earliest structural use of wood at least 476,000 years ago, the surrounding sand produced an age of at least 476,000 years with an uncertainty of about 23,000 years.

Interlocking Logs Reveal Early Combinatorial Woodworking Technology

The new excavations also uncovered additional pieces of timber with matching cut marks, including a remarkable pair of interlocking logs. Microscopic and technological analysis revealed that one log was positioned so that it fitted into a transverse notch cut into the other, with scraped areas and V-shaped cuts indicating the use of stone tools.

This construction demonstrates what archaeologists call a combinatorial technology—modifying separate pieces of wood and fitting them together to build a larger structure rather than simply fashioning an isolated tool or spear. While the precise purpose of the ancient feature remains uncertain, researchers suggest it could have formed part of a platform, walkway, or dwelling, offering an extraordinary window into early woodworking technology that almost never survives in the archaeological record.
