President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has faced pressure and criticism in relation to his choice for the next Minister of the Federal Supreme Court.
Lula nominated Cristiano Zanin for the seat on the Court, a decision that generated backlash and calls for the next nominee to be a black woman. However, the president was calm about the criticism.
The argument of the president and his allies is that Zanin’s choice was based on independence and the ability to make decisions based on sound legal convictions rather than political considerations.
Lula pointed out that his objective is to appoint a minister who follows the Constitution and who is not subject to external interference in his decisions. He emphasized the importance of the independence of the powers.
Despite requests to nominate a black jurist, the petista has already presented three male names on his list of preferences for the vacancy in the STF: Flávio Dino, Minister of Justice and Public Security; Bruno Dantas, president of the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU); and Jorge Messias, Advocate General of the Union.
The president has been consulting his allies to make a decision on who he will appoint to fill the vacancy that will be left by Rosa Weber, who will retire in October of this year.

Lula’s nomination to occupy a seat on the Supreme Court gained even more importance for the militancy of the PT and other leftist parties. There is a lot of concern that the president will nominate a person with a similar profile to Zanin.
On the other hand, there is a group of PT supporters who are against choosing a black jurist just to respond to militancy. Joaquim Barbosa is used as an example, as the former minister was responsible for Mensalão.
Despite being aware that Lula has a strong personality, not making decisions under pressure, important PT figures will try to convince him to nominate a woman in Rosa Weber’s place.
