Zanzibar is a major tourist destination along with Tanzania in East Africa.

90 percent of the region’s revenue comes from tourists who come to relax on its islands in the Indian Ocean, with its beautiful beaches and heritage.

As summer approaches, tourists from all over the world flock to Zanzibar. It is common for visitors to enjoy a cold beer.

There has been a severe shortage of liquor in the region for the past few months.

The price of beer has gone up by 200 percent.

Owing to the shortage of liquor, hostel and star hotel owners have been forced to serve soft drinks to tourists here.

Innkeepers fear that passenger arrivals will drop in the coming months if the liquor availability problem persists.

Because most of the population of Zanzibar Islands is Muslim, the production of alcohol is prohibited there. Therefore, they import liquor from South Africa for the requirements.

Importers must be born in Zanzibar and pay an annual fee of $12,000 to the government.

Since the issuance of licenses to 3 new importers, due to various reasons, liquor due to be imported is not arriving.

The people of the area opined that this situation threatens them as the livelihood of the local people also depends on tourism and the government should urgently rectify the situation.

In 2023, tourist arrivals to Zanzibar increased by 16 percent compared to previous years.
