In 2018, right-wing extremist chats from the Frankfurt police came to light. In the new episode of “ZDF Magazin Royale” Jan Böhmermann talks about this again – including the publication of the leaked news.

Five years ago, right-wing extremist chat messages caused concern in Frankfurt Police for a stir that came to light in the course of the “NSU 2.0” investigation. Depictions of Adolf Hitler, swastikas and other National Socialist symbols are said to have been shared in the chats of five officials, including three managers, at the time. Disciplinary proceedings were initiated and several departments were to be reorganized. It was not the first time that the Frankfurt police were associated with right-wing extremist content.

“ZDF Magazin Royale” publishes racist chat messages from five police officers

But what does the Frankfurt police look like now? Jan Böhmermann addressed this question on Saturday evening (September 29th) in the new episode of “ZDF Magazin Royale”. And it begins – surprisingly seriously for the otherwise relaxed satire format. ZDF introduces the program with the words: “This program is about racism, anti-Semitism, right-wing extremism, Holocaust relativization, Nazi glorification, incitement, sexism, misogyny, sexual abuse, mockery of the dead, ableism, Islamophobia, glorification of violence and desecration of corpses.” , in which Böhmermann talks about the case mentioned – and the chats that were leaked at the time are published as #HumorPolice for viewers to see.

Satirist “Cry? No.” Jan Böhmermann is Germany’s toughest scout. But does he also have a heart?

“Today I’m a police humor humor police officer. And police humor, not everyone understands it. Because nobody rarely sees it. Because police officers like to hide their kind of humor and their very, very good jokes in secret chat groups “Böhmermann begins after he has put on a police uniform and announces: “Where politicians, public prosecutors and police like to look the other way, the humor police like to look.”

And that’s exactly what Böhmermann does in the next 25 minutes of airtime. “In a WhatsApp group called ‘Itiotentreff’, some Frankfurt police officers showed their right-wing extremist sentiments, […] ‘It’s so disgusting, it makes your stomach turn,’ says a senior investigator,” a report from “Spiegel” is quoted as saying. That this can be taken literally becomes clear to the viewer at the latest when the moderator leaks the chats of the WhatsApp group – and the Frankfurt Regional Court’s decision at the time to drop the charges against the officials on the grounds of the right to “freedom of expression” and “artistic freedom” and the fact that the chat content was not published was rightly so question asks.

Right-wing extremism, racism as well as sexual and rape fantasies

In addition to birthday greetings for Adolf Hitler personally, the chat messages contain numerous right-wing extremist images that clearly refer to National Socialism, as well as inhumane, violence-glorifying and pornographic content, which – as Böhmermann makes clear with the help of fundamental rights – neither falls within the scope of opinion or opinion applicable in this country Art freedom falls. Not only racism and the glorification of violence emerge from the news, but also misogynistic content, sexual and rape fantasies and content that glorifies sexual crimes and the denigration of the dead.

Böhmermann’s words couldn’t express it better: “Imagine you report a rape to the police and then you are confronted with an amateur satirist like Johannes S. in the first station of the Frankfurt police station,” said the moderator and continued: ” Or they are the victims of a racist attack and need the help of the police – and the patrol car that comes by is occupied by members of this cool WhatsApp clique of armed amateur satirists.”

Böhmermann also talks about the consequences for the police officers – and quotes an article from the “Rechtsindex”: “After racist chats: Police officers have been receiving full pay for years – despite being released.” Payment despite suspension – a questionable penalty for the officials, who have been able to enjoy around 36,000 euros to 52,000 euros per year financially since 2018.

Böhmermann announces part 2 of the show

When Böhmermann asked the Frankfurt police, the moderator was told that the department was currently “not allowed to issue any sanctions against the WhatsApp group”. That’s not right, Böhmermann knows – and refers to Section 25 Paragraph 3 HDG, which shows that the police had the opportunity to act until 2023, but allowed the procedure to expire. But there is still room for maneuver, says Böhmermann, referring to other paragraphs. His conclusion: “The Frankfurt police screwed up.” Finally, the moderator announces that the next episode of the magazine will continue and deepen the topic – in the hope of further insights and progress in the punishment of the five police officers.
