Portuguese musician and composer Paulo Furtado that takes refuge as a one-man band in The Legendary Tigermanpresents his new album Zeitgeist, one more step in his solid career betting on the most forceful rock, garage or blues. Furthermore, for the occasion it is surrounded by such important collaborations as: Johnny Beth, Asia Argento, Anna Prior, Delilah Paz, Best Youth o Sarah Rebecca.
The disc Zeitgeist It is published at the same time as the launch of the topic on networks LOSERS, where does he participate Anna Prior, battery Metronomy. The video is directed by the Portuguese film director Edgar Pera which uses artificial intelligence to create an epic, dystopian film about the financial oppression that crushes society, the failure of capitalism, and the big lie we are sold about meritocracy.
LOSERS It’s a song about current events. It’s a wake-up call. We have to change, the world has to change, there are too many people living in conditions that are no longer tolerable.
Emotionally, I reached a point where I felt the need to stop and look inside me. To produce less. To buy less. To speak less, to eventually be silent. A time to look at my naked body. To look at other naked bodies. To look into someone’s eyes for hours and find myself alive in those eyes. I also felt the need to fall in love, again. To find joy and love in music, in art, in another person, in life. Because I had the memory of happiness.
ONCE I KNEW NO PAIN A memory of my adolescence, in my hometown, a small, dirty old town. My journey through this album is, in fact, a life-saving experience for me. Really I needed to change to stay alive. I really needed to fall in love, find a NEW LOVE, ONE MORE TIME and now I really need that love and music and art can point me the way to a good place within the crazy storm we live in. I think we ALL need it.
I need to find empathy within this cold capitalist world, where money and power and war are stronger than love and tenderness. Those who worry are not LOSERS. Really. And it’s so easy to fall from grace nowadays, right?
My stay in Paris. BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY? Homeless people sleeping on the ground in the cold streets, violence in the city at night and sadness on people’s faces. find one GOOD GIRL. Yes. Feel the breath of creating new music, new sounds, keep the energy or Rock’n’roll without guitars, feel that fire, burning. KEEP IT BURNING, really, inside the cold metallic heart of modular synthesizers. To discover a The new World. Again, I’m not so sure where I’m going, but I sure would like you to follow me on this journey.
Musically, I tried to follow the path left by early explorers of modular synthesizers like Suzanne Ciani o Wendy Carlosmixing it with the raw and powerful energy of early punk explorers like The Cramps, Suicide o The Sonics (my teenage heroes!) and the orchestral universe of people like Lee Hazleewood o Scott Walkerlooking at the past without losing sight of the future.
Zeitgeist It is also the meeting point between my work as a soundtrack composer and my life as a punk rock’n’roller. WILL WE BE ALRIGHT? Right now, I don’t really have an answer. But I can tell you that I do everything I can.
