Fans have waited a long time, now the sale begins: Nintendo has launched the latest part of the legendary video game series Zelda.

The Japanese video game company Nintendo has released a new part of the legendary Zelda series. The sale of “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” started at midnight on Friday night. Because of the time difference, the Japanese video game fans got their turn first, followed by the European ones seven hours later. From Tokyo to Paris, queues formed hours before stores opened at night because of the Zelda release.

Yutaka Hirai had been waiting in front of an electronics store in Tokyo with several dozen other fans since the morning. “I hope that in this new game I’ll find the vast landscapes and adventure from the previous game. The world was so big,” enthused the 30-year-old real estate executive.

The game revolves around the adventures of Princess Zelda and the elf warrior Link and was first released in 1986 as “The Legend of Zelda”. The various parts of the saga that have appeared since then have sold over 125 million copies worldwide. The series is considered to be instrumental in the development of so-called open-world games.

Nintendo landed a hit back in 2017 with Zelda

With the Zelda game “Breath of the Wild” released in 2017, Nintendo landed another hit: it has sold 29 million copies to date. The expectations of the successor are correspondingly high. Video clips of the game released in the last few weeks have been viewed millions of times. Serkan Toto, analyst at Kantan Games, expects “Tears of a Kingdom” to be by far “the biggest contributor to Nintendo’s sales this year”.

Mizuho Kawakami, 32, from Tokyo, bought the game online and downloaded it before bed so she could try it out in the morning before work. “I was so excited. I can’t wait to get into the adventure and will probably play it all weekend,” she says.

“We’ve been waiting for this game for six years,” said 19-year-old student Taylor Meguira, who paused in front of a video game store in Paris Thursday night. “The Zelda games have been a part of my childhood and my entire life to this day,” says 18-year-old Emilie Sastre.
