Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett discussed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ways to end the “hostilities” in Ukraine and Donbass and the efforts of the Jewish states to resolve the situation. This was announced on Saturday, March 12, by the office of the head of the Israeli Cabinet.
“On Saturday evening, a conversation took place between Prime Minister Bennett and Ukrainian President Zelensky. The leaders discussed ways to end hostilities in Ukraine and Israel’s efforts to do so.
As noted, the conversation lasted more than an hour.
Earlier, Zelensky called Jerusalem a suitable place to hold talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. According to him, Israel could provide significant mediation from a historical point of view. The leader noted that Israel should also be included in the list of guarantor countries for Ukraine.
On March 10, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba spoke about the possibility of a meeting between the heads of the two states. The Russian minister noted that the Russian president does not refuse negotiations with Zelensky, but preparatory work must be carried out before that.
On March 9, Deputy Head of the Office of the Ukrainian President Igor Zhovkva said that Zelensky was ready for a direct dialogue with the Russian leader to resolve the conflict. A day earlier, the President of Ukraine announced the possibility of discussing with Russia the issues of Crimea, as well as the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics.
In mid-February, due to the aggravation of the situation in the Donbass as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military, the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR) announced a general mobilization and announced the evacuation of the civilian population to the Russian Federation.
On February 21, Putin signed a decree recognizing Moscow’s independence of the republics. On February 24, he announced the start of a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. As the press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov clarified, the special operation has two goals – the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. According to him, both of these aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people.
