Zelensky concerned about the detention of Saakashvili – News – World – Kommersant

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is concerned about the news of the detention of Mikhail Saakashvili in Georgia and the tone of statements regarding the situation. This was stated by the press secretary of Mr. Zelensky Sergei Nikiforov.

“We are closely following reports of the arrest of Mikhail Saakashvili, chairman of the executive committee of the National Council of Reforms of Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is concerned about the news and the tone of the statements that are being heard in Georgia regarding the possible development of the situation, ”Mr. Nikiforov wrote on Facebook.

He added that Ukraine appeals to Georgia “for an explanation of all the circumstances and reasons for such a step in relation to a Ukrainian citizen.” According to the press secretary, the Ukrainian embassy in Georgia has not yet received official information about the detention.

Oleg Nikolenko, speaker of the Ukrainian diplomatic service, said that the Georgian ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry. “The head of the Georgian embassy has been invited to the Foreign Ministry to receive information,” he said (quoted by TASS).

The ex-president of Georgia and ex-governor of the Odessa region of Ukraine, Mikhail Saakashvili, returned to his homeland, where he faces a term for abuse of power, on the eve of the municipal elections. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced the arrest of Saakashvili. According to media reports, he was imprisoned in Tbilisi.
