Ukrainian local media reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has decided to run for a second term in order to continue the administration.

On the 8th (local time), Telegraf cited an unnamed close associate of President Zelenskyy and reported that the decision to run for re-election has already been made. The basis for this decision was that President Zelenskyy still received a respectable score of 52% in the public trust index surveyed by the Kii Institute of International Sociology (KIIS).

Some say that although President Zelenskyy has never officially announced his intention to run for president, he has emphasized the role he will play in the future in each interview, indicating that he has in fact repeatedly revealed his intention to run for president.

However, the condition is that he run for re-election in an environment where Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK, Valery Zaluzhny, who served as commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, is not running for president. Currently, Ambassador Zaluzni has not made a final decision regarding his presidential bid.

Ambassador Zaluzny has been very popular since he served as Commander-in-Chief, and was mentioned as the only candidate who could defeat President Zelenskyy in the presidential election. Some opinion polls showed that Ambassador Zaluzny had a higher approval rating than President Zelenskyy.

The media explained that for that reason, the Chief of Staff of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, encouraged Ambassador Zaluzhny to side with President Zelenskyy and that if he accepted, he could take the position of Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (parliament).

One Ukrainian political source predicted that if Ambassador Zaluzny decides to run for president, he could face a criminal trial in connection with a series of incidents that occurred while he was serving as commander-in-chief.

Ambassador Zaluzny was suddenly dismissed from his position as commander-in-chief of the military in February after rumors of discord with President Zelenskyy. There was also an interpretation that he was trying to keep his political opponents in check due to his national popularity. He had a conflict of opinion with President Zelenskyy during the war. Suspicions have also been raised that Ambassador Zaluzni secretly participated in war-ending meetings with Western officials.

To date, Ambassador Zaluzni has never appeared as a politician. He did not gain party membership or create a party. Because of this, there is a view in Ukrainian political circles that he may join hands with Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko if he decides to run for president due to a lack of political support.

On March 31 last year, when the presidential election was supposed to be held, Ukraine passed without an election. Ukraine, which is currently at war with Russia, is under martial law.

According to Ukraine’s constitution, elections cannot be held under martial law. In order to hold an election, martial law must be lifted through a ceasefire or end of the war, or the constitution must be amended. Both are currently unlikely to be feasible.

As May 20 last year, the last day of the term scheduled for the election, passed, it is believed that President Zelenskyy’s term has been extended. Russia is spreading propaganda that President Zelenskyy is a president without representative legitimacy.
