Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired Ilya Vityuk, a high-ranking official in the SBU intelligence service, amid allegations of corruption, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The decree was published last night on the website of the Ukrainian president, without specifying the reasons for the dismissal. Vityuk was the head of the cyber security department of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

Earlier, Ukrainian media published investigations in which it was reported that Vytyuk’s wife had bought a luxury apartment in the center of Kyiv. He was already on leave before his dismissal.

Zelensky promised to continue the strict fight against corruption and the embezzlement of state funds. Evidence of success in this struggle is a prerequisite for his country’s aspiration for EU membership, DPA notes, recalling that Ukraine is considered one of the most corrupt countries in Europe. The Minister of Agriculture was recently forced to resign after being implicated in a corruption case.
