“January 25th is also possible… “If the U.S. guarantees security, we will talk with Russia.”
“I hope Trump becomes the first leader to visit Ukraine by plane.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he expected to hold an end-of-war meeting at the end of this month and that he would meet with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump first.
According to RBC Ukraine and TASS News Agency on the 5th (local time), President Zelenskyy said in a three-hour interview with American computer scientist and podcaster Rex Friedman that he is ready to hold talks to resolve the war in Ukraine at the end of January. He said this.
In an interview, Friedman pointed to January 25th as the desired date for the meeting. President-elect Trump, who has pledged to immediately end the war in Ukraine after taking office, will officially take office on the 20th of this month.
In response to this, President Zelensky replied, “I have no objection if January 25th or any other day is designated as January 25th,” and “We will sit down with President Trump first.” He continued, “We will reach an agreement with him (Trump) on how to stop the war and stop (Russian President) Putin.”
He added, “Secondly, since we are also part of Europe, it is very important for Europe to participate as well,” adding, “Then dialogue with Russia can take place.”
President Zelensky emphasized that President Trump would be open to dialogue with Russia if it provided strong security guarantees to Ukraine. “And then we can talk to the Russians,” he said.
However, President Putin claimed that he did not want to negotiate and added that he would find reasons not to talk.
He also expected that President Trump could become the first foreign leader to visit Ukraine by post-war aircraft.
President Zelensky said, “The war will end and President Trump could become the first leader to visit (Ukraine) by plane. It would be a symbolic thing.”
Ukraine suspended airport operations other than for military purposes following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Then, at the end of October last year, a skyway was proposed to open airspace under martial law. Then, in November, insurers decided that western Lviv Airport could be reopened in 2025. In this case, Lviv Airport will become the first airport to resume air traffic after 2022.
