Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, plans to travel to Hiroshima to participate in the summit of leaders of the G7 which is held from today until Sunday in that Japanese city, according to local media, citing Executive sources.

Zelensky would arrive in Japan on Saturday to participate in the day of meetings on Sunday in a session dedicated to the war in Ukraine, and would have planned to hold bilateral meetings with US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, according to the same sources.

A spokesman for the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs avoided confirming this information when consulted by EFE, and referred to what was announced in previous days by Tokyo, according to which Zelenski would participate in the discussions electronically. The White House also refused to comment on the possible assistance of the Ukrainian leader when asked by EFE.

If Zelensky’s visit is confirmed, it would be his first trip to Asia after the start of the Russian invasion, and would take place after his meeting in Ukraine last March with the Japanese prime minister, who holds the rotating presidency of the G7.

His attendance at the summit would come at a time when Kiev seeks additional military assistanceincluding the dispatch of American F-16 fighters, and as the Group of Seven seeks to reinforce measures of pressure on Moscow.

The leaders of the G7 made a historic visit this Friday to the Museum and the Peace Park of Hiroshima, the first city to be attacked with an atomic bomb, in a gesture aimed at sending a message against the use of weapons of this type and before Moscow’s nuclear rhetoric after its invasion of the neighboring country.
