Zelensky: first you need to hold a referendum on NATO, and then include it in the constitution

It would be more correct to first hold a referendum on NATO membership in Ukraine, and then introduce such a clause into the constitution, President Volodymyr Zelensky said, RBC-Ukraine reports.

“In general, I think that such issues should be decided precisely at a referendum, such issues should be decided only by the people, and then they should be included in the constitution. But we are where we already are,” the head of state said.

Zelensky added that most of the NATO countries consider Ukraine’s decision to include a clause on striving for a military bloc into the country’s basic law as wrong. “But we have it. This is exactly the choice of the Ukrainian people: where we want to be. But it is not the choice of the Ukrainian people when we are there that depends not only on us,” he stressed.

According to Zelensky, now the issue of the exact date of NATO membership is not acute, but Russia uses the possible imminent entry of a neighboring country into the alliance as an excuse, “why they are standing on the border, that they are allegedly protecting their sovereignty.”
