Ukraine Seeks NATO Membership, Emphasizes Territorial Integrity

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine’s aspiration for NATO membership is unwavering, but acknowledges the reality of ongoing conflict. In a recent interview, Zelenskyy stressed that any invitation to join the alliance must encompass Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders.

Zelenskyy emphasized, “A genuine path to peace necessitates Ukraine’s inclusion in NATO. The invitation must extend to the entirety of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders. This is not a point for debate; it’s enshrined in our constitution and international law. Such principles cannot be compromised.”

He underscored that NATO membership offers the strongest guarantee of security for Ukraine, positioning it as the crucial first step towards achieving lasting peace. While understanding that NATO membership during wartime is improbable, Zelenskyy believes that extending an invitation sends a powerful message of unwavering support.

“Ukraine recognizes that inviting NATO forces directly into the conflict is not feasible. Allegations that Ukraine seeks to drag NATO into war are unfounded. Our aim is an invitation, a tangible symbol of commitment. We understand that joining NATO during wartime is unrealistic, yet securing this invitation is paramount to achieving genuine peace,” Zelenskyy stated.

Zelenskyy recently engaged in discussions with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, focusing on strategies for peace and emphasizing the critical need for global leaders to collaborate effectively ahead of crucial December negotiations.
