Zelenskyy and Officials Condemn Russian Strike Killing 30 in Kramatorsk

A Russian aerial bomb struck two passenger buses in the frontline Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk on Thursday, killing at least 30 people and wounding 18 others. The devastating strike occurred amid an intensifying pre-winter aerial campaign as Moscow pressures Ukraine’s industrial heartland.

The morning attack unfolded on a city street where two municipal buses were operating, leaving the metal shells of the vehicles charred and human remains strewn across the tarmac as regional authorities confirmed the heavy death toll. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed that the bombardment would not go unanswered, while local leaders and national officials accused Moscow of deliberately attacking non-combatants in one of the deadliest single incidents in weeks.

“The Russians are deliberately targeting civilians,” regional administration head Vadym Filashkin wrote on Telegram.

Donetsk regional governor Vadym Filashkin accused Moscow of flouting every conceivable rule of warfare and norm of international humanitarian law. The Kramatorsk City Council echoed those statements, calling the strike yet another horrific crime committed by the Russian army against the civilian population and noting that there were absolutely no military targets in the immediate vicinity.

Transport Suspended Across Kramatorsk and Sloviansk Amid Infrastructure Assaults

In response to the deteriorating security situation, Filashkin ordered the immediate suspension of all public transportation in Kramatorsk and neighboring Sloviansk, warning that officials had no right to risk the lives of passengers and drivers.

Throughout the conflict, Russia has consistently denied targeting Ukrainian civilians, though such statements carry little weight for Ukrainians enduring daily bombardment. UN rights chief Volker Turk stated that he was appalled by the horrifying strike on the two buses.

With civilian aviation grounded since the 2022 full-scale invasion, buses, trains, and trucks serve as critical lifelines for both commercial and humanitarian supply lines. Rail networks handle nearly two-thirds of Ukrainian freight, including exports of steel slabs, grains, and vegetable oils that keep the national economy afloat. State-run railway monopoly Ukrzaliznytsia reported that at least 521 locomotives have been hit by drones and shelling since 2022, with three-fifths of those strikes occurring in 2026 alone.

Fierce Battles Near the Donetsk Fortress Belt and Worsening Blackouts in Kyiv

Kramatorsk serves as a vital logistics and supply hub for the Ukrainian military, anchoring the fortress belt that defending troops are fighting to hold in the eastern Donetsk region as Russian forces edge closer to the eastern fringes.

Zelenskyy Urges Western Defense Support During Joint Visit With British Foreign Secretary

During the visit, Miliband announced more sanctions on Russia, on the war machine of Putin, on the shadow fleet, on the oil companies, on the crypto, on the financing of the war, and reaffirmed that the United Kingdom would stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes. Standing alongside the British official, Zelenskyy appealed directly to Western allies for accelerated air defense assistance, noting that the recent attacks occurred on the birthday of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelenskyy also urged the United States to raise the pressure on Moscow and expand Starlink satellite internet coverage to allow Ukraine to strike launch sites inside Russia, warning that Vladimir Putin is trying to win by terrorising civilians. The United Nations has verified more than 17,000 civilian deaths since the conflict began while noting that the real toll is substantially higher, with figures during the first eight months of 2026 reaching 15,280 casualties—a toll 55 percent higher than during the same period in the previous year amid a relentless nationwide surge in long-range bombardment.
