Zero alcohol during pregnancy, an ISS project to inform mothers – Health and Wellbeing

(ANSA) – ROME, 06 SEPTEMBER – The ‘Zero alcohol during pregnancy’ project, coordinated by the ISS, is underway. On the occasion of the World Day for the Fight against Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FASD) and Related Disorders (9 September), the awareness campaign launched on the main social media by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, with the scientific coordination of its National Addiction and Doping Center, includes the distribution of information material in secondary schools, expert testimonials, promotion via social media and video clips (reels). The aim is to reach young people and, more generally, anyone planning a pregnancy, to explain in a simple way that there is no safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy: the only possible choice to protect the unborn child is not to drink alcohol. A small but still significant percentage of future mothers, 0.2%, fall into the category of chronic drinkers, while almost 6% are social drinkers, that is, they drink occasionally during meetings and outings with friends and colleagues, as highlighted by the latest data from the National Center for Addictions and Doping of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità for the three-year period 2019-2022, which push us to strengthen the information on how important it is to choose not to drink. This initiative is also accompanied by the project “Maternal and child health: training of social and health workers and empowerment of young women (18-24 years) on the risks associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy” supported by the Ministry of Health and coordinated by the National Center for Addictions and Doping and the Scientific Technical Service for Coordination and Support for Research of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and includes courses for workers on alcohol-related risks with the aim of providing skills for the structuring of clinics for the early diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).
As part of the project’s training action, the first distance learning course entitled Alcohol and substance use during pregnancy will start on September 9th, delivered on the Eduiss.it platform. (ANSA).
