As reviews of people experiencing stomachache and diarrhea after drinking Ediya Coffee’s Zero Sugar beverage have been pouring in, Ediya Coffee has added a warning message to its kiosks.

However, Ediya Coffee has stated that it has no plans to stop selling the zero sugar beverage it launched last month.

According to the industry on the 9th, Ediya Coffee released two zero sugar drinks on the 29th of last month: ▲Zero Sugar Iced Tea ▲Zero Sugar Ashatchu (iced tea with an added shot).

Some consumers have reportedly complained of stomachache and diarrhea after drinking Zero Sugar beverages. However, according to Ediya Coffee, there have not been many complaints regarding Zero Sugar beverages.

Ediya Coffee’s Zero Sugar beverage contains ‘erythritol’ as a substitute sugar. Erythritol has side effects that can cause headaches, stomachaches, and diarrhea when consumed in excess.

An Ediya Coffee official said, “Since sugar can cause digestive discomfort if it exceeds the appropriate intake amount for each individual, we are continuously monitoring customer discomfort,” and “There are currently no plans to discontinue sales.”

Ediya Coffee has added a warning message on its kiosk order screen, homepage, and application (app) that “excessive consumption may cause diarrhea and other symptoms,” as alternative sugars may cause gastrointestinal side effects depending on the individual’s constitution.

However, erythritol itself is not problematic.

Erythritol is a sweetener approved by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the World Health Organization (WHO), and its safety has been proven internationally.

An official from Ediya Coffee said, “Both the WHO and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety have determined that it is a safe ingredient that adds flavor to food, so there are no special restrictions on the amount it can be used in,” adding, “It has no calories because it is not digested, but for the same reason, some people may complain of stomachache if they take too much depending on their individual sensitivity.”
