Zoi Konstantopoulou Meets with President Sakellaropoulou to Demand Accountability on Wiretapping Scandal and Fire Management

by time news

On Wednesday afternoon, the President of the Movement for Freedom, Zoë Konstantopoulou, met with the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, at the Presidential Palace. It is worth mentioning that she had requested to meet with the President in order to address issues regarding the wiretapping case, which the Supreme Court put in the drawer, and the government’s management of wildfires.

“In such critical moments, the opposition is more important than the government. Representing the opposition, the Movement for Freedom, and the citizens, I presented to the President of the Republic the request that the council of political leaders must convene, in order to discuss yet another cover-up, the cover-up of the wiretapping scandal. In a democracy, political personnel cannot be monitored, active ministers of major authority cannot be surveilled, journalists and opposition figures and potential leaders cannot be watched, and there must be no accountability. In a democracy, it is not acceptable for half of the government to be monitored, and for the judiciary to assure that everything is well done,” noted Zoë Konstantopoulou upon leaving the presidential palace.

She went on to emphasize, “The council of political leaders that needs to convene should examine the longstanding crime of the wildfires. We must speak with honesty, with respect towards the victims, the citizens, the environment, the animals, the birds, all living beings, and those affected. […] These issues cannot be hidden under the carpet; after all, there is no institutional carpet large enough to cover such serious matters. I am ready and determined to undertake any initiative necessary to shed light on the issue of the wildfires.”

Moreover, Zoë Konstantopoulou subsequently stressed: “The citizens must know; the Greek people must learn what happened that day, on July 6, 2015, the day after the referendum when the Greek people voted 62% ‘no’ against the blackmail, and starting from the council of political leaders under President Pavlopoulos, a process of violating and overturning the political mandate began. The political leaders of that time perhaps did not want these minutes to be made public, but today all have expressed themselves positively.”

Among other things, today, Zoë Konstantopoulou announced that she would also submit in writing the request for the publication of the minutes of the Council of Political Leaders of July 6, 2015, a request she officially made to the President of the Republic on July 24, 2024.
