Yes, I have loved this story for as long as I can remember. It’s incredibly short, though; The original book has maybe 50 or 60 pages, with many pictures. That’s why I was curious to see how they were going to turn it into a full feature film. The script really surprised me, because it tells a very big children’s story – and it’s still true to the spirit of the original.
The mother portrayed in the film is a disabled singer who once dreamed of a big concert career. Was this written specifically for you for your famous musical talent?
The fact that Terri is a classically trained pianist who is unable to make her dream come true is in the script from the beginning. And I don’t think I have an influence because I also play the piano. This aspect of the character is not present enough in the film. But of course I’m happy, after all music played a big role in my life.
Not only has she had a fantastic acting career, she has also enjoyed great success with indie pop duo She & Him, founded the popular website HelloGiggles.com and recently managed several projects as a food activist. Do you even know such things as dreams that never come true?
Of course, of course. As amazing as my life has always been, there are still desires and dreams that I would like to fulfill. For example, when I was a teenager, I used to dream of making my own clothes or doing anything related to clothes. This is exactly what I can also imagine. Apart from that, it is actually quite good that as an actor you get to bring many different characters and live life. Sometimes you can try one or two dreams in front of the camera.
Is the appearance really a trick or has he been working – at least in front of the camera – less often for several years than before his children?
I actually work pretty consistently, I would say. Only after my “New Girl” series ended six years ago did I take a break of about a year and a half. Simply because the previous years were not weak and the children were still quite small. And so there is the pandemic, where I have filmed “Harold and the Magic Chalk” at least in 2022. So I can’t say that I will reduce on doing it in any way. It’s only possible that way because I haven’t been on screen in a sitcom every week for a while.
But with so many projects and family on top of that, surely it becomes at least one more choice, right?
I thought about every offer: Is this something I would be happy to jump out of bed for in the morning? But of course, children have changed a few important things. If the filming takes place so far that I can’t fly home every now and then, that has more of an exclusive brand for me, for example. Other than that, I make professional decisions based on the same questions as before.
“New Girl” ran for seven years starting in 2011 and ending six years ago. It’s certainly too early for wistful nostalgia or even re-imaginings…
At the moment it is more likely that many people are discovering the series for the first time. And some people believe that it is present and we do it again. That’s the funny thing about series that end up on most streaming services these days: most of today’s viewers don’t even know when a series is from or where it may have previously aired. They are happy to discover something that is new to them.
Food and nutrition have always been important topics for you in 2009, you were a guest on the show “Chef Teacher” with a focus on vegan dishes. Most recently, he also produced his own programs such as “Your Food Roots” and “What Did I Eat?” When did dealing with these things become important to you?
These issues have always been a part of my life, because I cannot tolerate dairy products, eggs or soy and I am also sensitive to wheat. At some point, I realized that I was not the only one who had to think about their food, and I became more and more happy to use it and learn new things. I find it very interesting to talk to nutritionists, chefs or other people with food knowledge, and I would like to share this with others. Whether you want to call this activism, enlightenment or just curiosity is anyone’s guess. It is definitely something close to my heart and I can combine it wonderfully with my main job and do it on the side.
Do you have the impression that you have more open ears these days when it comes to intolerances or food sources than before?
The benefits are growing, I would say. But also the confusion. There is a fair amount of misinformation circulating around these topics, and it spreads when people talk passionately about food on Tiktok or Instagram. The hunt for recipes and favorites leads to surprising surprises, even about things that should be left to science. My interest is in the latter, which is why I want to help other people to find really important information and in fact what is good for them and what is not.
If clean eating is important to you, do you want to cook for yourself? Or do you still like going to restaurants?
Of course, I love eating out. Especially in restaurants where you know what you are doing and where high quality products are used. You can get some information in advance and also find a conversation in the restaurant. In Berlin, for example, there are many fantastic restaurants, I will have to go there again soon. Also because I like architecture in the city a lot. In general, I am a real city person. Beach holidays are not my thing at all, I like to travel to European cities, go to museums and, above all, to great restaurants.
