Alexander Zverev, 3rd in the world, qualified for the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo on Thursday by dismissing the Spaniard Pablo Carreno (19th) 6-2, 7-5.
The German, beaten in the second round in Indian Wells for his entry into the running, then in the quarter-finals in Miami, will try on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the first major tournament of the season on clay: he will be opposed to the Russian Andrey Rublev (8th), finalist last year, or the Italian Jannik Sinner (12th).
Zverev had reached the semi-finals in Monte Carlo in 2018, which remains his best result in this tournament so far. Last year, he was eliminated in the round of 16 by David Goffin.
