Zvika Pick, the “king” of Israeli pop, is dead

Zvika Pick, one of Israel’s most popular singers and author of numerous hits that earned him the nickname “king”, “maestro” or “pillar” of Israeli pop, died on Sunday at the age of 72. “Zvika Pick passed away today but her songs and melodies will continue to be played for years to come”commented the Israeli Prime Minister, Yaïr Lapid, after the artist was found dead at his home in Ramat Hasharon (center), according to the local press.

“The hits he created have entered every home in Israel and thousands of hearts”Israeli Culture Minister Chili Tropper said, hailing “one of Israel’s greatest artists”.

He additionally signed the music for the song Diva, performed by Israeli trans singer, Dana International, who won Eurovision in 1998.

Born in Poland in 1949, Zvika Pick immigrated to Israel as a child with his parents, before playing in the Israeli version of the musical Hair and to sign flagship local pop hits, such as the song Mary Lou still hummed by generations of Israelis.

Zvika Pick was also the stepfather of Quentin Tarantino, his daughter, the Israeli singer Daniella Pick, being married to the famous American director.
