Taean is big (泰), and An (安) is comfortable. Taean is located in the northwestern part of Chungcheongnam-do. Taean is a comfortable place and a good place to live, just like its name. And it is a land with a beautiful and long coastline of over 500km.

Anmyeondo’s Kkotji Beach is the number one destination for a beautiful sunset and a seaside trip, and from the unique desert landscape of the Sinduri Coastal Sand Dunes to arboretums filled with gorgeous summer flowers like hydrangeas and lotuses – a place with diverse natural scenery that feels new the more you get to know it.

The sea is bustling with seasonal seafood and surfers enjoying surfing, and farmers who have finished harvesting before the rainy season are enjoying their summer vacation. The summer of Taean people is expected to be filled with romance this year as well!

There is an exhibition hall where you can see relics from the Goryeo Dynasty excavated from the sea off Taean, and a memorial hall for overcoming oil spill damage that shows painful memories and hope… In Taean, you can experience various cultures that are hard to find in other regions.

A place where you can walk along the pine-scented seaside road, see summer flowers blooming everywhere, and hear stories told by the sea. Let’s head to Taean, where natural treasures provided by the vast sea live and breathe.

This week (August 19th – August 22nd) at 7:20 PM, the 4-part series ‘Flowers, Sunsets, and Sea, Taean’ will air on EBS 1TV.

Eel fishing in season

The representative summer health food, conger eel. Conger eel, which is caught all year round throughout Taean, is a saltwater fish that is caught the most from June to August. Fishermen go out into the dark sea to catch conger eel in season. When they arrive at their destination, their hands are busy pulling the traps.

“Taean has strong currents and good mudflats. Right now, eels are very oily.”

The best for recovering energy! The taste of conger eel

A traditional market in Taean-eup where seafood caught in the sea off Taean gathers. The market alleys are filled with the smell of grilled eel. In Taean, grilled eel, which is made by placing a whole eel on a hot plate, is famous. In addition, the spicy eel soup that Taean people seek out in the summer is a delicacy among delicacies!

“Many people come from Taean to taste eel, so this street is packed during dinner time.”

Taean’s representative famous mountain, Baekhwasan

Baekhwasan Mountain is 284m above sea level, located in Taean-eup. There is a small temple called Taeeul-am on the hillside of Baekhwasan Mountain. At Taeeul-am, you can see the Taean Dongmun-ri Rock-carved Triad Buddha, a sculpture from the Baekje period. Unlike other triads, the Taean Dongmun-ri Rock-carved Triad Buddha has a unique form with a central Bodhisattva statue and Buddha statues on either side.

Treasures of the tidal flats, Marine Artifacts Exhibition Hall

Taean Marine Artifacts Exhibition Hall is a meaningful exhibition hall that excavates, preserves, and exhibits our cultural heritage under the sea. In the exhibition hall, you can see approximately 1,300 artifacts discovered in the West Sea. The excavation of the artifacts began in 2007 when a fisherman who was catching cuttlefish in Taean Daeseom accidentally discovered a Goryeo celadon with a cuttlefish attached to it.

“All the artifacts we are seeing would have been difficult to preserve if there were no tidal flats.”

Black goat farmer living in harmony with clean nature

Won-seok, a native of Taean, raises black goats and lives in Taean. In front of his house, which is located in front of a reservoir, lovely puppies run around the yard. Today, Won-seok’s house was visited by some welcome neighborhood friends. He had a pleasant evening with his friends who came carrying a large tuna.

“This is healing. This is natural healing.”

We take a look at the story of Taean, a place that embraces the vast ocean and tidal flats, and the people who live in Taean’s nature.
