There is a secret space on the second floor of Baekbeom Kim Gu’s refuge in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, China. There is an emergency escape route that leads to a lake hidden in the floor. A wooden boat is moored under the escape route so that he can escape to the lake at any time. This is a symbolic place that clearly shows the difficult life of Baekbeom who fled here to avoid Japanese authorities. Baekbeom continued his struggle for independence by moving to Hangzhou, Nanjing, Chongqing, etc. through Jiaxing with key figures of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea until just before liberation.
The author, a modern Chinese historian, describes the process in which Baekbeom participated in the anti-Japanese movement with the help of many Chinese people in Nanjing and elsewhere. In particular, he describes in detail the time when he joined hands with Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist government and fought a joint anti-Japanese struggle. In 1933, Baekbeom met Chiang Kai-shek in Nanjing and requested that Koreans be admitted to the military academy, which he agreed to. Afterwards, a class for training Koreans was opened at Luoyang Military Academy.
With financial support from the Kuomintang government, Baekbeom was able to organize the Korean National Party in 1935 and barely pull the provisional government back to its precarious state. On November 3, 1935, when the provisional government was reorganized, seven of the State Council members were Korean National Party executives, which was the background for Baekbeom’s ability to seize real power in the provisional government. The story of the Chinese people who helped Baekbeom escape, such as Chu Fu-cheng (1873-1948), a Kuomintang executive, and the female boatman Zhu Ai-bao, and who maintained a close relationship with him, is also interestingly told.
