“There is a famous story in philosophy. ‘I think. Therefore it exists.’ But as I continued to live, I realized, ‘I love. ‘Therefore it exists.’ That is correct.”
These are the words of the author, a philosopher who turned 105 years old this year. When we met by phone on the occasion of his recently published new book, he emphasized love for the entire 30 minutes. “The person who succeeds in love is the person who will win at sports competitions and the person who will win the marathon of life.”
The new book contains people and anecdotes that awakened Professor Roh’s love. It deals with how to love as you get older and how to deal with separation from a loved one. The story of his interactions with friends from his school days, including poet Dong-ju Yun, novelist Sun-won Hwang, and doctor of medicine Hong Chang-eui, also unfolds in an interesting way.
I asked about his love with his wife, who passed away 20 years ago. “When my wife was in bed for 20 years, everyone kept asking, ‘What should I do because I’m having a hard time?’ When you are young, you are happy to live with the feelings of love, but when you are over 60, love itself becomes similar to friendship and turns into human love. Even if my wife is sick, our friendship-like love remains the same. “That is the happiness of love, and you should not think of it as the pain of love.”
The book also contains a story about the author reminiscing about his wife with his children. When the children said, “I don’t know why my mother died after suffering so much,” the author said, “Even if she were to be reborn, she would say that she would want to go back to those difficult times when she raised you in war and poverty. “Because that was the happiest time.”
I asked how to love your children wisely. “You just need to protect them when they are young. After a child grows up, talking to him and going with him is love. By the time they graduate from high school, their sons and daughters come first. “It’s about letting people live their lives with a sense of responsibility without interfering with them.”
The author is still active in writing and lecturing. “I loved my job. Loving your job means loving the other person you work with. I believe that I will deliver good content to those who listen to my lectures that they will remember for the rest of their lives. “I think that’s a gift of love.”
